Roberto Gutierrez

Roberto F. Gutierrez Roberto Fernandez Gutierrez was born May 26, 1956 in Billings, Montana. When he was young, his family lived in Mossmain, now a ghost town, east of Laurel, before they moved into Billings. He was the son of a railroad worker and a hard working mother. He was the third son and seventh child of nine. Born, raised and educated in Billings, Roberto had many friends in all areas of his life. From the time he sold newspapers at the age of six until his death, Roberto never failed to make a friend. He was a graduate of Billings Senior High, Go Broncs! He would always check in on the football scores and root for them. Roberto was the first in his family to obtain a degree, a BSBA in business from Eastern Montana College, in 1982. This was a monumental achievement for him. After college, he was hired by Osco Drug as an Assistant Manager and moved to Wyoming. While at a work study job for college in 1979, he was asked out by his future wife, Nina Magers. After a few years of dating, they were united in marriage at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings, MT and recently celebrated 31 years together. Roberto was hired with the IRS in 1985 but remained in Casper, WY until he completed orientation in Cheyenne. After being trained as a Revenue Officer he was stationed in Sheridan, WY. After twelve years, they were able to move back to Billings with the IRS and he continued to work for them until the time of his death. Roberto was looking forward to retiring this coming spring, 2015. In 1992, Roberto and Nina welcomed their first child Julia and in 1995,Thomas was born. Roberto loved to go watch them play their soccer, softball, baseball, football games and wrestling matches. He was a proud dad and loved to cheer them on. When his son's Junior Little League baseball team went to California for winning the Montana State Title, he traveled with the team. When his daughter received a scholarship to play for a college softball team he did not miss the chance to tell people as he thought it was so cool. One of his past-times was volunteering as a Little League umpire for many years. He had a weakness for softball and when he could, he helped call the outs from behind the plate. Roberto drove the St. Patrick Co-Cathedral homebound bus for many years. Once a month he would pick up and return parishioners in the bus for those who were unable to drive themselves to the church. He was a diehard Miami Hurricane fan. The bet was on especially when it came to playing against the Nebraska Huskers. He enjoyed the rivalry because the Huskers' fans were equally as diehard. He thought college football was the best. He loved to sit and talk with a sister or a friend about economics, politics, sports, it did not matter; he enjoyed these conversations immensely. He also loved his fishing and accumulated many poles and reels so whenever there was some downtime or the need to get away, he loaded up the vehicle and a'fishin' he would go. Roberto brightened many faces; he would tell a joke, laugh his infectious laugh, and make those around him smile. For this he will always be remembered. Roberto's life was shortened by a bleeding stroke. He left us Saturday evening, September 20, 2014 to be with his Lord and Savior, our merciful God. In death, he reunites with his mother, Cecilia, father, Vicente, brother, Joe, and sisters, Mary and Margaret. He is survived by his wife, Nina, and his children, Julia, and Thomas. He is also survived by sisters, Yolanda (Ralph), Terri (Bob), Eugenia (Duane), Martha (Jeff) and brother, Vincent, and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Vaya con Dios, Roberto. We love you and you will be missed. Visitation is Thursday from noon to 6:30 p.m., followed by a vigil at 6:30 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be noon on Friday at St. Patrick Co-Cathedral. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
